What is so important about your lymphatic system?
Think of the lymphatic system as your body’s garbage disposal. When it is not working correctly, it is similar to when you put so much food in your sink and it gets stuck and cannot move down into the garbage disposal. When this happens you can never eliminate the garbage, even if the disposal is turned on. However, if you manually push the food down, the garbage disposal can pulverize it and send it through the pipes. Lymphatic vessels are always working collecting cancer cells, fat, water, waste materials, bacteria, viruses, and they help eliminate the extra protein from our body. The Lymph nodes clean the lymph fluid that is collected from the lymphatic vessels. However, when it is not working correctly all of the garbage is never removed and reabsorbed into your body.
The lymphatic system is comprised of lymphatic vessels that carry clear fluid called “Lymph” that seeps out of cells. Lymph fluid is filtered and returned back into the blood system and the garbage is eliminated. When your lymphatic system is not working properly and you are sedentary then the lymph fluid can collect in your body. For instance, when traveling in an airplane, and you are not moving, fluid can collect in your feet resulting in lymphatic fluid pooling in your feet and ankles. When your lymph is congested it can not collect excess protein causing water retention, leading to swelling or edema, resulting in sluggishness, fatigue, cellulite, arthritis, headaches and weight gain.
The spleen, thymus and tonsils are lymphoid organs. Tonsils work with the digestive system and the spleen and thymus assist the immune system. These organs perform similar functions as the lymph nodes do, but the spleen filters blood instead of lymph fluid.
Lymph nodes are a collection of lymph tissues, with the largest nodes located in the neck, armpits, groin and stomach. Lymphatic vessels move the lymph fluid to the lymph nodes. The lymph nodes are critical for a properly functioning immune system. The lymph nodes filter cancer cells and other garbage, which is a good reason to make sure your lymphatic system is running efficiently.

He concluded that including cold therapy you can increase your fat burning potential by 300 percent.
Tim Ferriss’ Ice Therapy suggestions are listed below. I tried several times to do the alternating cold and hot showers. I gasp every time I turn the water to cold. It sounds easy to do, but I just can’t do it.
Tim Ferriss’ Ice Therapy:
- Place an ice pack on your upper back and upper chest for 30 minutes per day (you can do this while relaxing in front of the TV for example)
- Drinking 16 ounces of ice water in the morning.
- Take a cold shower. Beginners should alternate cold and hot, eventually you are supposed to get used to it and be able to do it for a longer period.
- Immersing yourself in ice water up to your waist for 10 minutes, three times per week. He suggests filling the tub with cold water and ice cubes, eventually immersing your entire body except for head and hand for an additional 5 minutes.
Before you start implementing manual lymphatic drainage consult your doctor. Especially if you have cancer, asthma, diabetes, kidney issues or thyroid disease, because lymphatic drainage increases the immune system. People with congestive heart failure should also avoid lymphatic drainage because it lymph flow through the system, including around the heart.
The therapy is not recommended for pregnant women or women during menstruation.
After the treatment, you may feel exhausted, thirsty it may increase secretions from the nose or ears and change the smell of sweat, urine and stool. But these are not bad signs, they indicate you are eliminating harmful substances from your body with a slight but almost magical touch.
